FAQ

Questions people ask

If yours isn’t here, ask me. I’d rather answer it than have you wonder.

Before reaching out

What if I don’t know what to say?

That’s genuinely fine, and very common. “I don’t know where to start” is a perfectly good way to start. Part of my job is helping you find the words.

Do I have to describe what happened in detail?

No. This worries people more than almost anything else, and it isn’t how this works. Both Brainspotting and EMDR process trauma without requiring you to narrate it. You control what you share and when.

Can I just ask questions first?

Yes. That’s what the free 15-minute call is for. Plenty of people use it to ask what therapy is even like.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

You often don’t until you’ve talked to someone. Fit matters more than credentials, and it’s worth a first conversation to find out. If I’m not the right fit, I’ll say so and try to point you somewhere better.

Sessions

How long are sessions, and how often?

Sessions are 53+ minutes, usually weekly to start.

How long will I be in therapy?

It depends on what you’re working on. Some people come for a few months with something specific. Others stay longer. We’ll talk about it as we go rather than committing up front.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes, with the limits every therapist has: if there’s a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, if there’s suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or if a court orders records. I’ll go over all of it in our first session.

The trauma therapies

What’s the difference between EMDR and Brainspotting?

EMDR is structured, with defined phases and protocols. Brainspotting is more open and led by what comes up for you. I’m trained in EMDR and certified in Brainspotting, and we can try either.

What is “parts work”?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS. The idea that you’re made of parts that sometimes want different things, and that the part you’re frustrated with is usually trying to protect you. It works well alongside trauma processing.

Does any of this work over video?

Yes, all of it. EMDR uses on-screen bilateral stimulation or self-tapping, and Brainspotting works over video with essentially no loss.

Walk & talk

Is walk & talk really therapy?

Yes. Same clinical work, outdoors and moving. Walking provides bilateral stimulation, which in my experience tends to support deeper processing.

What if someone sees us?

We agree in advance on what happens. Usually I follow your lead and don’t acknowledge you unless you acknowledge me first. Outdoors, confidentiality can’t be guaranteed the way it is in a private room, and you should know that going in.

What about winter, or bad weather?

We move the session to video, or reschedule. Your call.

Fees and insurance

What does it cost?

$125 per session if you’re paying yourself, or your plan’s copay if you’re using insurance.

What if I can’t afford that?

Say so when you reach out. I keep a limited number of reduced-fee spots, and there’s no application to fill out.

Which insurance do you take?

Most major Wisconsin plans, including Aetna, Anthem BCBS Wisconsin, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Ascension SmartHealth, Carelon, ForwardHealth Medicaid and Providence.

Logistics

Do you work with children?

I work with ages 16 and up.

Do you do couples or family therapy?

No, individuals only.

I’m not in Wisconsin. Can we still work together?

Unfortunately not. I’m licensed in Wisconsin only, so you need to be physically located in the state during our sessions.
